Severely Injured Gymnastics Coach, Awarded $25.5 Million
A Florida jury awarded a former gymnastics coach, $25.5 million for injuries that left him a quadriplegic from the neck down. Shane Downey, 32, who now resides in Texas, suffered his injuries while using a piece of tumbling equipment, at North Florida Gymnastics and Cheerleading. Jurors found the gym 100% guilty, on charges of negligence of supervision, while Downey was operating the tumbling equipment. More than half the award received by Downey, will go towards his medical expenses involving his broken neck. This is a unique verdict. In most cases, when a person joins a gym our health club, that individual would “assume the risk”.
